From Glasgow most of my life and didnt know about Gulabi Photo Ltd. Thanks for that and your video :)
Would really love to see an editing workflow video. Amazed at how fast you get suff done!
(would particularly love to see editing gig/ concert/ event photos as I find they can be extra challenging)
For sure!! I can do something like that. Often I go live on TikTok whilst I’m editing, if you’re interested in that! Also, as for gig photos, a lot of the work I do requires live editing, where we edit on site between sets, so that changes the workflow a lot.
@@SophiaCarey ok cool I’ll keep an eye out for your lives on tiktok too. Thanks for the reply 💖
Subscribed. Nice pics. That's very impressive. When pushed on 35mm, what was your aperture and shutter speed? I suppose that is a little silly since I don't know what the ambient light was like. What I really want to know is if you were able to handhold? It looks like you were not fully open as their was some depth of field. Cheers.
Hey! Thank you so much! There was a range of scenarios so my settings would have varied from scene to scene depending on the light, and I can't think back that far away to give you an exact number for both, but if you have a specific image in mind I can give it a good guess! Thanks!
I haven't purchased one yet. I do use a Olympus Pen S often. I use it for snap shots instead of my cell phone when I carry it. That gets me through 72 shots pretty quickly. The auto features will help me get more keepers.
Watching your video i discovered that is kushtrim kunushevci, a retoucher who do the color work for some important photographers. Like William Arcand. So i wonder wich why he is not mention in some works, even when he was part of the team…
Amazing, thanks for letting me know about him! Also I didn’t note any other members of the team, such as stylists etc, because this video is about photographers, but of course they’re all valuable members of the creative team and how the final product is created.
@@SophiaCarey My question was for the photographers who work with him haha not for you <3 your video is amazing
if you haven't got a screwdriver to hand you can use a coin to open the battery compartment on the canon ;)
hey, do you think that the 21l version will fit a 16-inch Macbook pro in an additional protective polycarbonate case that widens the entire structure by about 5 mm in each direction?
Hey! I’m not 100% sure but I think if it did it would be very tight. My 15-inch MacBook fit but I’ve never tried anything bigger than that.
It's definitely interesting to say the leaset- $500 can be a big ask, but if someone is planning to keep it for a long time they're are getting something reliable 100%
That’s very true! Although I guess time will be the test on reliability and longevity
I like this. Used a Pentax since the early 90s, good to see a young hepcat the gang!
Just curious as to how labs will charge to develop and scan a half frame film.
You can drone on forever about what you like or dislike re this camera, and its feature set is a weird mix of technology used or missing, but who cares? The real question is who would buy and use this camera, and that relates to what it can do. What it can do is more easily defined by what it cannot do. It cannot be a camera for professional use, and it was never intended for that role. It is not intended for serious amateurs, who do their own processing, make enlarged images to display, or go out on trips specifically devoted to photography, landscapes and such. That leaves it for casual use: snapshots, parties, babies and pets. The images get scanned and end up on cell phones, Facebook, and videos like this one. But here's the rub, whether the thing costs $500 or $50. My 18-year-old PowerShot SD1100, all 8 megs, will do all of that and a lot more, yielding an image which is already digital, is at least as good when viewed for these purposes, and can be edited and sent on to its final social media grave in less time that it takes to scan one roll of film from a Pentax 17. It's a third the size and weight, used, less than 20% the price of the 17 new, doesn't require 72 photos to access results, and doesn't cost $30 for a roll of film and processing/scanning. Cell phones - same story. So, who exactly makes up that anticipated flood of Pentax 17 buyers? As a sign of film rising like a Phoenix from the ashes of digital, I think it is a dud on arrival. (Too bad if I'm right. Imagine the "17 project" guys going before the Ricoh board with "We can make it different next time.")
It’s okay to let people enjoy a camera. If you don’t like it or want to use it, that’s fine.
@@SophiaCarey Fully agree. I was simply pointing out the usage limits and economic conflicts which purchasers of the Pentax 17 will face, as the reviews and commentaries commonly gloss over that part of the decision-making process. Over the decades there have been a huge number of cameras, even whole formats, offered which made little sense for existence, but were purchased for all sorts of non-photographic reasons.
Great video. Do you know how many watts the lights he used are? I’m still trying to figure out if lights under 600 watts will work in studio shooting with my Pentax 67.
In Mexico price is 870 usd. So i think it's an insane price for a camera that doesn't even have autofocus nor even a fully manual control of exposure parameters.
Agreed, that's definitely steep!
In two years, I've bought a minolta x9, Pentax mx, olympus mju 1, radioactive takumar 50mm F1.4, takumar 135 F2. 5, Helios 58, Rokkor 28 F2. 8, Pentax 50 f1.7, scanning kit, adapters from M42 to Pk and MD for less than 650 usd. For me it's a nonsense to buy this half frame camera 😔.
It takes me an age to shoot a full roll of 35MM as it is, I’d never finish one if I had this camera 🤣
Hahaha that’s been me! But it’s also kind of made me less precious about the photos I take on film, which I think is a good thing in the long run.
@@SophiaCarey Yeah I think that’s why I like using a point & shoot sometimes because it helps tell my brain into feeling the shots don’t need to be perfectly composed, they can just be a document
I think this camera is going to sell really well
To whom and why?
@@randallstewart1224 because I think there’s a pushback against the disposable nature of digital imagery (ability to shoot hundreds of shots mindlessly & find the story in post), whilst there is simultaneously a pain point being felt in the film photography world around film prices, so I think a half frame camera neatly fits into that gap & as this is a new camera it’ll get more airtime than older half frame cameras so I think this is the one that people will likely be aware of & thus buy
Just got mine, looking forward to use it to document my life
Hope you enjoy it!
I have about 4 rolls of film through mine. I preordered it the day they started allowing orders. I am an experienced film photographer - and wanted a pocketable, reliable, fast & easy film cam - and it is perfect for that. All the hate / negative critics seem to have the same things in common - they can't wrap their heads around what it actually is vs what they want and none of the most critical reviews I have seen actually have one.
Completely agree with you! I think that some people, especially when it comes to film photography, just want something to complain about haha
549 EUR is quite steep to buy one for a review if you think that the camera is fundamentally flawed. It's only natural that people having a negative opinion about the 17 don't own one 🤷♂ Weird to expect otherwise... I'm sure, you don't own a lot of things that you don't like and still have a negative opinion about them.
@@OriginalTLab3000 Sure, there are things I have a negative opinion about that I don't own - however I don't / won't put forth all the effort to make a entire video for RUclips about those things without actually trying them first. I don't care if someone likes or dislikes this camera - but many of the heavily critical videos created didn't even bother to watch / read the information Pentax released to why they made this camera, or the choices in it's design. Several I watched commented negatively about the handling of the camera, or it's feel - yet they had never held one. It is/was blatant engagement/view farming. One "reviewer" where I mentioned this even thanked me for "contributing to his channel's algorithm." This is the double edge sword of RUclips, you have people who create honest work - and then you have people who don't care about the truth//integrity of what they create and just want to jump on a bandwagon and get some engagement out of it.
@@theangrymarmot8336 I understand what you're saying. Commenting on the feel of a camera despite never having held one in their hands - yeah, that's stupid. And view farming has reached worrying levels. I have to admit that I'm probably a bit too emotional about the Pentax 17 and I'd really like to make a video about it, but not before having the chance to actually use one. However, to me, it seems that Ricoh is having a good old laugh. I think the 17 is a joke, or maybe even a scam. Ricoh could have done so much better, but they decided not to, and that annoys me. And Ricoh was clever enough to hand out 17s to a huge amount of "reviewers" feeding the hype. All the while it being a disservice getting beginners to buy this camera. Well, whatever. It's not my money. Maybe it makes Ricoh stick to the plan and present the second new analog camera, soon. One that has all the good stuff.
Exposure issues with the i2 have recently been acknowledged by the designers. Apparently the auto exposure algorithms were designed in conjunction with film having a lower iso value. There will be a firmware update soon to rectify this. As far as framing goes all non SLR cameras have this issue with parallax and relies on the photographer taking this into account if needing precise framing.
That’s good to hear!
This is the kind of review that RUclips is desperately missing. Thank you for taking your time and focusing on use case, not just specs. Got a sub from me!
Thank you so much! I’m not the most technical of people/photographers and so I don’t want to pretend I am. You can get much more detailed reviews on specs from other creators who are brilliant at what they do, all I aim to do is talk about a camera from my perspective and how it fits into my life and workflow. Glad that there are people who enjoy my ramblings haha!
Agreed - I can read a spec sheet all on my own.
Great review! Thanks! As for Pentax; it must have been an enormous lift to sell the management to make a new film camera. I think i will buy one just as principle to support the effort. It is very brave! I do think they came-up short in the combination. The half-frame would be great with AF; or make a full-frame m42 body (with metering + flash) that fits all M42 lenses. Do not fix what is not broken! If they would make a 645 using the current Pentax 645 lens collection and able to use the old lenses; it would fly of the shelves. Keep it simple; manual settings only with metering, flash sync and AF + ground glass focus plane. Give all people with existing Medium Format lens collections a reason to get the new Pentax 645/F (film).
I definitely agree re: Pentax. I think it’s important to show support for projects like this, and Harman’s development of colour film for example, to show companies and manufacturers that there is still an appetite for film photography. I think the potential of them releasing more cameras off the back of this release, like they mentioned in their Film Camera Project, is really exciting. Fingers crossed that they do move back into medium format, too!
It isn't auto focus for the same reason it isn't auto-advance. They wanted a camera that gave the "film experience/character" in operation and part of that is manual focus (Zone is easy for newbies, but still gives the feeling of manual focus) and manual film advance. If the camera was auto-focus then it would handle just like the eleven billionity point and shoot digitals and they didn't want that. Personally, I like the choice of Zone focus as I find it fast and easy to pre-set for situations.
@@theangrymarmot8336 I completely agree. I think it’s clever positioning.
I’d love a compact camera like this! Thanks for the review ❤
I think you’d actually love it and use it loads precisely because it is so compact!
Can you compare this vs something like a ee3?
Let me get my hands on one, and I will do!
Thanks for your detailed review! :)
Thank you for watching!
She needs correction keyboard,it shoud've come with the scanner, correcting color using mouse is very pain in the .a2se
Thanks for posting this Sophia!
Do you shoot one stop over exposed on this camera ?
Often, yes. I find the meter isn’t massively accurately so sometimes I’ll shoot +1 stop as I’d rather the film be overexposed than under
How do you upload films? Been wanting to get a film camera and post it on my social media but don’t know how to upload the films lol
Hey! Once you’ve shot the film, you need to get it developed and scanned. You can learn to do this at home (there’s lots of resources online) but I’d recommend taking it to a local lab until you get used to the shooting process. Building a relationship with a local lab can be really useful too as they’re usually able to answer your questions throughout your film journey!
amazing photo, love it! Btw I just wanna ask, when shooting this personal projects and working with stylists and make up artists, are you paying them or is it just a pure collaboration only?
Thank you! And it completely depends on the project and who you’re working with. For this shoot I worked with collaborators I’d been discussing collaboration with for a long time, but there are instances where, if it was a personal project with less of a collaborative nature and I just needed someone to assist my vision, there should be a budget allocated for the rest of the team. Also, if you’re getting paid for the final outcome, that money should be split throughout the team, of course.
How do you do that with money when you want to do these shoots? do you pay the model of do you get payed for what you shoot for or how does that work exactly?
This shoot was a collaboration so everyone worked on a collaborative basis but if you were hired by a magazine for an editorial, they would allocate the budget to pay the team. So you’d be paid by the magazine/publication.
@@SophiaCarey Cool, alright, thank you so much for your answer! Also, when you pitch to brands/ magazines does it apply the same way then? that they pay the team?
@@Rosesareorchidpink it will depend on the publication and if they’re buying the story from you (which might be more likely for print publication than it will be online).
@@Rosesareorchidpink for brands it’s a different case entirely, if you’re working for a brand, they’ll be paying you. You don’t do the shoot until you get booked with a brand, it’s a different way of shooting/making money. I have other videos about shooting lookbooks for clothing companies and working with brands, if you want more information.
Do you use any lens filters? If so, what kinds do you use and prefer the most?
I don’t personally, no!
WOuld actually love to see how you edit the colours and your approach to this! great video Sophia
She's amazing funny down to earth....she talks from her heart ...so beyond real....god bless her
If you're processing the film yourself, it's actually useful that the film winds itself out of the canister. Good work.
Hi Sophia! I just purchased an RB with the 90mm lens! Do you have a recommendation for your favorite lens to use for portraits? I want to invest in one more!!
Another video offering insights into the use and function of the Pentax 67 system from someone with no experience or learned knowledge about the camera or its operation. I.E., a waste of time. The first 40% of the video is devoted to a circular discussion of the Pentax;s limitation of shooting daylight balanced flash. (That not what she says, but it's what she is doing.) HInt: as a user of the Pentax for 40 years, I'll assure her that using it to shoot daylight balance flash handheld is a waste of time and effort. There were two lenses which incorporate leaf shutters to do this, but they are a frustrating pain in the ass to use (speaking from personal experience). They are also both second class optically compared to their non-leaf shutter alternatives when shot as a normal lens. The Pentax 67 does everything else so well, that it can be forgiven this shortcoming. Also, she undertakes to compare the color rendition of a Pentax 67 with a Mamiya RB (?), using different film types in the cameras. What is that supposed to show? Amazing.
You’ve got a strange way of understanding a video. I’m talking about MY first impressions of using a camera. MY experience, using it in MY practice. Not once have I claimed for this to be the best all and end all guide or resource to this camera. Using flashes within fashion photography is something that is instrumental within my professional practice, and I use them often with other cameras. My reference to that within this video wasn’t about my intention to solely use flashes with the Pentax, it was about the fact that I haven’t yet attempted it and so can’t offer an opinion on how that fares. Further, your point regarding colour rendition is ridiculous. I wasn’t referencing the different colours between the two cameras, since I referenced that there were different film stocks anyway. The comparison I was making by shooting both rolls was more regarding how I compose images using the different cameras and also how the metering fares between metering manually on the Mamiya and using the built in meter on the Pentax. Your comment is incredibly condescending and I don’t appreciate your energy at all. I make these videos as a journey throughout my practice, which I am transparent with and always have been throughout the existence of the channel, to share my experiences and learn and grow with other likeminded photographers. If this channel is not for you then, please, do us both a favour, and don’t waste your time watching or commenting. People like you and your “feedback” are what discourages people from sharing their journey and progress and is absolutely what’s wrong, and stunting the growth, of the photography community.
So, she wants tips on why Phoenix 200 prints so badly on RA-4 color printing paper. Okay, here's a few. C-41 films normally have the red-orange mask for a reason. it's not just make them harder to print. It's there to color correct the image dyes in the negative to match the requirements of the RA-4 processed color paper. Phoenix 200 omits that printing mask entirely, so it is clear that Harmon has never intended the film to be RA-4 printed. They intentionally limited its use to digital scanning/printing, which is still inhibited because film scanners are pre-programmed to deal with the C-41 color mask, and not finding the mask upsets the accuracy of the scan process to some degree. Another reason for the failure of Phoenix 200 as an RA-4 printing source is that the color palette is grossly uneven, in that some colors (reds) are very strong, while others are very weak. It's very hard, probably impossible, to color balance around these issues with the technology limitation of RA-4 printing. Therefore, you can get some saturated colors with RA-4 printing, but they just won't accurately reflect the real colors of the source. You will also find it impossible to print both highlight and shadow details, because of wildly excessive contrast. These technical problems are uncorrected in Phoenix, and you'd need digital post-processing to recover from them. While all of this may seem strange, the relative number of people making wet-darkroom RA-4 prints today is so small that Harmon's decision to ignore their needs when developing this produce, presumably to save money, is fairly understandable. Summary: As evidenced by the print results in the video, RA-4 printing of Phoenix is a waste of time and money.
Ironically, I’ve been in conversation with Harman throughout the process of them making this film, and they have considered how it prints, and done various tests on that themselves. This is merely an experimental video. Please see my reply on your other comment for my thoughts on your wonderful feedback.
You did well covering all that in 48 hours - I've lived here 20-odd years and I'm still finding new things. It's a great city with fabulous, creative, talented people.
I'm from Korea! I watched the video so impressively. It helped me a lot and I was able to overcome my fear of using the lights. I have one question. When I see the video, it looks a little blue-toned in the studio, but I wonder if the blue light was shot by turning on the color filter or controlled the color temperature.
Hi, it was using an RGB constant light. Hope that that helps!
I just got one, love it so much. Agree so much about it being an slr. I couldn’t take my rb67 anywhere easily.
Would you still recommend this lens for 2024?
100%. I’m in the middle of festival season now and I use it on every show.
@@SophiaCarey200mm is it enough or do i need more?
@@HeavyG it depends on what you’re shooting. For most festivals and large venues it’s enough, but if you’re shooting stadiums you’ll probably need something that extends to 400-600mm depending on the venue and the type of work you’re commissioned to capture.
She mentioned for accessible versions of the lights she used, do you have a link for those?
What kind of paper do I need for COLOR film contact sheets
Any colour printing paper - I usually use Fuji Crystal.
